How To: Add An Additional Tank To Your Horn Kit

Want more blast time without replacing your current tank? A second air tank can be added with a few fittings and air line — as long as your compressor can handle the extra capacity.

  • What you need: a second air tank, 1/2" air line or a 1/2" NPT hex nipple, thread sealant, and unused tank ports plugged before pressurizing

Steps

Check your compressor model for max tank size before you buy a second tank. Both tanks stay at the same pressure once they are linked.

Choose a tank that matches your compressor

Before buying, ask: how much air capacity am I adding, is the compressor strong enough for the increased capacity, and will the increased fill-time be a problem?

If your system currently has one compressor, there is a good chance it is rated for up to 5 gallons total. Exceed that, and a second compressor is recommended.

Example: Adding another 2-gallon tank to an existing 2-gallon setup usually works with one compressor. Adding a 5-gallon tank on top of what you already have typically requires a second compressor.

Connect the tanks with 1/2" air line

Run a 1/2" air line between the two tanks so air can travel freely from one to the other. Once connected, both tanks equalize and stay at the same pressure.

It does not matter which tank you use as the outlet to the horns or air accessories — pick the most convenient port for your install path.

Or join side-by-side tanks with a hex nipple

If the tanks mount next to each other, you can thread them together with a hex nipple fitting instead of a long air-line run.

This fitting has a 1/2" NPT thread on both ends and works well for side-by-side tank mounts.

Use thread sealant on NPT fittings and confirm every unused port is plugged before pressurizing the system.

Place tanks where they fit best

The tanks can be as far apart as you need them to be. There is no strict maximum distance for a dual-tank setup.

Long runs: If the tanks are more than about 50 feet apart, a larger line may be needed to keep airflow steady. Longer air line adds resistance — similar to a garden hose.
