The Compressor Is Blowing Fuses

An inline fuse protects the kit when the compressor draws too much current. Here’s why that happens and how to fix it.

  • What you need: wrenches for the check valve, inspection of the red power wire, and optionally a carbon brush rebuild kit

What the Fuse Is For

Inline fuse between battery and compressor / switch

Kits use an inline fuse on the positive feed as a safety device. Compressors typically draw ~18–30 A at 13.8 V; kit fuses are usually rated 35 A. When draw exceeds that rating, the fuse pops and cuts power.

Without a fuse, excess current can overheat wiring and create a fire risk. Never skip the inline fuse.

Why the Compressor Pulls Too Much Power

Worn check valve

The check valve keeps tank air from escaping back through the compressor. When it wears or fails, tank pressure pushes back on the motor, so it pulls excess current and blows the fuse — especially if the tank fills from empty fine, then the fuse pops on restart.

Remove it from the leader hose with two wrenches. The check valve is the piece circled in red. Blow against the arrow — you should only be able to blow in the direction of flow. If air passes both ways, replace the valve.

Exposed power wire

Frayed copper on the red wire can short to the frame and blow the fuse as soon as it is installed. Trace the wire to the pressure switch and fix any exposed strands. Wires too close to an exhaust manifold can melt and short as well.

Poor connections

Loose crimps drop voltage and raise amp draw. Re-crimp any soft connections between the fuse holder and pressure switch.

Wire run too long

Runs longer than about 20 ft lose voltage. Step up to 8 or 6 gauge for long positive feeds.

Worn carbon brushes

If the checks above do not help, the motor’s carbon brushes may be worn. HornBlasters offers carbon brush rebuild kits for many compressors.
