Frequently Asked Questions

What is an air bag in an air suspension system?

An air bag, also called an air spring, is the rubber and fabric bellows that replaces or supplements a coil or leaf spring. Air pressure inside the bag carries the load, so raising or lowering pressure changes ride height and stiffness. It is a suspension component and has nothing to do with the airbags that deploy in a crash, which is a common source of confusion.

How do I know which air bag fits my vehicle?

Air bags are selected by physical dimensions and port size rather than by vehicle badge. The three numbers that matter are the style or model, the stroke, and the diameter, plus the air port thread. Measure the space between your mounting points at ride height and compare it to the bag's stroke range so it is neither fully collapsed nor fully extended in normal driving.

What is the difference between the styles of air bags you carry?

The styles describe the bellows shape and how much travel the bag has. This collection carries Firestone and Dominator air springs in the common 2500 and 2600 style ranges, in both 1/2 inch and 3/8 inch port sizes. Choose the style that matches your bracket spacing and travel, and match the port size to the air line you are running.

Do I need anything else to run air bags?

Yes. Air springs are one part of a system. You also need a compressor to supply air, an air tank to store it, valves to control each bag, and air line and fittings to connect it. If you are building from scratch it is worth planning the whole air management setup first, then choosing bags that suit the ride height you want.
