FAQs

WHAT IS AN AIRHORN?

An airhorn (also spelled "air horn") is a pneumatic device that produces a loud, attention-grabbing honk by forcing compressed air through a flared trumpet. The compressed air vibrates a metal diaphragm or reed inside the horn, creating sound waves that the trumpet amplifies. Airhorns are significantly louder than standard factory vehicle horns and are used on everything from semi trucks and emergency vehicles to boats, trains, and aftermarket truck builds.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AIR HORN AND A TRAIN HORN?

Air horns and train horns both use compressed air to produce sound, but they differ in tone and structure. Air horns typically use one or two trumpets to produce a sharp, attention-grabbing honk in the 130 to 145 decibel range. Train horns use three or more trumpets tuned to create the harmonized, multi-tone sound traditionally associated with locomotives, often producing around 150 decibels. The right choice comes down to whether you want a sharp commanding honk or that deeper, locomotive-style blast.

WHAT'S THE LOUDEST AIR HORN AVAILABLE?

The Kahlenberg KM-85 is considered the loudest air horn available, designed for marine and industrial applications where maximum sound penetration and clarity are essential. It can produce sound levels capable of cutting through the highest-noise environments, making it ideal for ships, harbors, and large vessels, though some customers have successfully mounted them on trucks and other vehicles for an unmatched aftermarket sound. For a more compact option, our Rocker Air Horn is the loudest air horn in the HornBlasters lineup that's specifically built for vehicle applications.

CAN I INSTALL AN AIR HORN ON MY CAR OR TRUCK?

Yes, air horns can be installed on virtually any car, truck, SUV, boat, or other 12V or 24V vehicle. You'll need an air horn, an air compressor, an air tank, a pressure switch, an air valve, air line, wiring, and mounting hardware. If you don't already have these components, our complete Air Horn Kits include everything required for a fast DIY install, with detailed instructions to walk you through every step. If you already have an onboard air system from a previous build, our standalone air horns can be paired with your existing setup.

WHERE CAN I MOUNT AN AIR HORN?

Air horns can be mounted in several locations, depending on your vehicle and preferences. Common mounting locations include under the hood, in the engine bay, behind the front or rear bumper, along the frame rails, under the bed of a truck, or on the roof. The key considerations are airflow direction, protection from road debris and water, and accessibility for maintenance. We recommend mounting your horns facing downward or rearward rather than directly forward, since front-facing horns can collect moisture and debris inside the trumpets that may cause them to sound off until the buildup is blown out. Compact air horns like the Rocker fit easily in tight engine bays, while larger marine horns like the Kahlenberg are typically mounted externally where space allows.

ARE AIR HORNS LEGAL?

Air horns are legal to own and install on virtually any vehicle in the United States. However, how you USE the horn matters. Most jurisdictions have noise ordinances that focus on disturbing the peace in residential areas or causing public disturbances. Using your air horn to alert distracted drivers, prevent collisions, or signal at approved events is generally accepted. Avoid using air horns to harass others, disrupt public spaces, or in noise-sensitive areas. Always check your local and state laws before installation if you have specific concerns.

WHAT'S THE LOUDEST AIR HORN FOR A TRUCK?

For aftermarket truck builds, the Rocker Air Horn is the loudest air horn in the HornBlasters lineup specifically built for vehicle applications. It features two of the four trumpets found in our Shocker XL train horn, delivering a similar deep, powerful sound in a more compact package that fits more easily in tight engine bays or under truck beds. For buyers who want maximum sound, our standalone Kahlenberg KM-85 marine air horn has been successfully mounted on trucks by customers who want commercial-grade volume.
