A single 12V compressor pulls 20 to 35 amps while it runs, and a dual setup roughly doubles that. That's a heavy load, so a compressor never runs off a small switch. It gets its own relay and a fused power wire straight from the battery, and the pressure switch only activates the relay. The mistake we see most is undersizing that power wire or fuse for the draw, which leaves the compressor running weak or popping fuses. Size both to the compressor's rated amps and it'll pull full power for years.

What does duty cycle mean on an air compressor?

Duty cycle is how long a compressor can run before it has to rest and cool, given as a percentage at a set pressure and temperature. A 50% rating runs half the time and rests half. A 100% rating is the highest. Here's what trips people up though: 100% doesn't mean it runs forever. Our compressors are rated 100% at 100 PSI but drop to 50% at 200 PSI, because higher pressure and heat eat into that runtime. Push one past its limit and a thermal overload switch cuts power until it cools. It won't burn up. It just stops until it's ready. Charging a big tank at high pressure? Go with the higher duty cycle so you're not standing around waiting on it.

What is CFM, and how much do you need?

CFM (cubic feet per minute) is airflow, or how much air the compressor moves. More CFM fills a tank faster. Here's the part people get wrong for horns though: there's no CFM number you need to honk. The horn honks off air already stored in the tank, and the compressor just refills that tank afterward, so a lower CFM only means a slightly longer wait before it's full again. Where CFM really earns its keep is constant-demand work, like air tools or airing up tires, where you're pulling air the whole time and want it back fast. For a horn setup, size your tank first and let the compressor keep up.

Where should I install a 12V air compressor?

Somewhere solid, dry, and out of the weather. Bolt it to flat metal, like a frame rail, the bed, the trunk floor, or under a seat, with the hardware it ships with, because these units vibrate and will shake loose on a flimsy mount. Give it room to breathe, since it makes heat and needs to cool between runs. Keep it off the ground and out of direct spray; standing water and road grit are what kill compressors early. Can you use a tire inflator to run air horns?

No, and here's why it won't work. First, nothing honks a horn straight off a compressor of any kind. The horn needs a tank to store the air and dump it in one burst, so an inflator could only ever fill the tank. Second, cheap inflators aren't built for that. They run 10 to 20 minutes before they have to cool, they've got no tank of their own, and running one nonstop to keep a tank charged just overheats it and burns it out. Should I run a single or dual 12V air compressor?

Single, for most builds. One compressor, our HB-3Q or HB-1NM, keeps up with a horn on a tank up to about 5 gallons without breaking a sweat. Go dual when you're charging a big tank, running air suspension, or you just want the tank to recover fast, since two compressors move roughly double the air. The catch is current: a dual 3Q or 1NM pulls around 40 to 50 amps combined, more for bigger units, so size the wiring and fuse for it. Do you need a relay to wire a 12V air compressor?

Yes, always. A 12V compressor pulls 20 amps or more, way too much for a little switch or the factory wiring, so it runs through a relay.
