Will a 12-volt onboard air system work on my truck?

If the truck runs a 12-volt electrical system, which nearly every pickup, SUV, and passenger vehicle does, then yes. These systems are built to run straight off that supply, so the compressor, pressure switch, and wiring are all matched to 12 volts out of the box. Heavier commercial trucks, some diesel equipment, and a lot of marine and military vehicles run 24 volts instead, and those need the 24-volt onboard air systems rather than anything on this page. Check the voltage at your battery bank before ordering, because the two are not interchangeable.

How many amps does a 12-volt onboard air system draw?

Enough that it needs a dedicated feed rather than a spare accessory wire, and the figure follows the compressor. The HornAir 2-Gallon and 5-Gallon systems each peak at 25 amps, while the dual-compressor HornAir 8-Gallon reaches 50. That is the tradeoff of 12 volts: for the same work a 12-volt compressor draws roughly twice the current a 24-volt one would, because current rises as voltage falls. It only pulls that while the compressor is filling the tank, but the wiring and fusing have to be sized for the peak rather than the average.

What wiring does a 12-volt onboard air system need?

Heavy gauge wire, a fuse at the battery, and a relay sized for that peak draw rather than for a normal accessory. The kits cover the relay: the HornAir 2-Gallon and 5-Gallon systems ship with a 110/150 PSI pressure switch carrying a 40 amp relay, and because the HornAir 8-Gallon runs two compressors it uses a pressure switch with dual relays. Run the compressor feed from the battery through a fuse and that relay, keep the run as short as practical, and ground to clean bare metal, since voltage drop on a long thin run is what leaves a 12-volt compressor filling slowly.

Can I run a 12-volt air system on a 24-volt vehicle?

Not directly. Feeding 24 volts into a 12-volt compressor will damage it, so on a 24-volt vehicle you either fit a 24-volt onboard air system built for that supply, or add a voltage reducer sized to carry the compressor's full current draw. Given that these systems pull 25 to 50 amps at 12 volts, the reducer becomes a significant component in its own right, so on a genuinely 24-volt vehicle the purpose-built system is usually the cleaner answer. The reverse also holds: a 24-volt compressor will not perform on a 12-volt supply.
