What is a stand-alone train horn?
A stand-alone train horn is the horn only. It has no compressor, tank, or wiring in the box, so it assumes you already have an onboard air system or are building one. That is the difference between this collection and a complete kit. If you do not already have air on the vehicle, a complete kit is the better starting point because the compressor and tank are matched to the horn for you.
What do I need to run a stand-alone train horn?
You need three things: a compressor to make air, an air tank to store it, and a valve to release it. The horn does not care where the air comes from, only that there is enough volume behind it. Larger trumpets move more air per honk, so a bigger horn paired with an undersized tank will sound fine for one honk and then run out. Match the tank to how long you want to hold the horn.
What is the difference between a replica and an authentic locomotive horn?
Both are real air horns, but authentic locomotive horns are the same castings used on rail equipment, which is why they cost considerably more. Can I mount a stand-alone train horn on a boat or RV?
Yes. The horn mounts anywhere you can secure it and route air line to it, which is why stand-alone horns are common on boats, RVs and work vehicles. On a boat the priority is corrosion exposure, so mount the horn where it drains and keep the compressor and tank in a dry locker. On an RV the priority is finding a frame member that can carry the weight of a full-size horn.
How many trumpets should a train horn have?
Trumpet count changes the chord, not simply the volume. A true locomotive chord needs at least three bells, each tuned to a different note, so they stack into the deep railroad sound people recognize; one or two trumpets give a simpler, sharper tone closer to an air horn. More bells beyond three add fullness rather than raw loudness. Choose the number of trumpets for the sound you want, then size the air system to feed them.
What makes one train horn louder than another?
Trumpet length and running the horn at its ideal pressure do most of the work. A longer trumpet moves more air and produces a deeper, further-carrying note, which is why full-size train horns outreach compact air horns that use shorter trumpets. Pressure is not simply more-is-louder, though: every horn has a sweet spot, and 150 PSI is that spot for most, with a few topping out closer to 120. Past the sweet spot the note actually goes higher-pitched and loses volume rather than gaining it, so a horn fed 200 PSI can end up quieter than the same horn at 150.
