What makes one train horn louder than another?

Trumpet length and running the horn at its ideal pressure do most of the work. A longer trumpet moves more air and produces a deeper, further-carrying note, which is why full-size train horns outreach compact air horns that use shorter trumpets. Pressure is not simply more-is-louder, though: every horn has a sweet spot, and 150 PSI is that spot for most, with a few topping out closer to 120. Past the sweet spot the note actually goes higher-pitched and loses volume rather than gaining it, so a horn fed 200 PSI can end up quieter than the same horn at 150. Bell count changes the fullness of the chord rather than raw volume, so more trumpets sound richer but not automatically louder.

What do the different horn styles sound like?

The number and tuning of the bells set the character. A single-trumpet horn gives one clean note, and a two-trumpet air horn like the 2-Chime pairs two tones for a bright, sharp blast. The true locomotive chord is a different thing: it needs at least three bells, each tuned to a different note, so they stack into the deep railroad sound, and the Octohorn takes that furthest with eight tuned bells. Tugboat and marine-style horns are pitched lower for a deep, mournful blast rather than a bright chord, so the best pick depends on whether you want a sharp alert or that full train chord.

Can I mount both a train horn and an air horn on the same vehicle?

Yes, and pairing a deep train horn with a sharper air horn is a common build. Both draw from the same tank, so the practical question is whether the tank holds enough air to sound them without bogging down. Plumb each horn through its own valve so you can trigger them separately or together, tee both off the same tank, and step up to a larger air tank if you want to hold both on for a sustained blast. The horns do not interfere with each other; only the air supply sets the limit.

How much air does one honk of a train horn use?

It depends on how long you honk and how large the horn is. A quick honk draws very little air, while a long one empties the tank quickly, and a larger horn with longer trumpets consumes more per second than a compact one. This is why tank size, rather than the horn itself, sets how many honks you get before the compressor has to refill. If you want repeated or drawn-out honking, choose a larger air tank rather than a bigger horn, since the tank is what holds the reserve the horn draws on.
