This is one of the most common questions we hear. The answer is: it depends on your location and how you use it.

In most U.S. states, there's no law against having a loud horn on your vehicle. The laws typically regulate when you use your horn (for safety warnings only, not for expressing frustration) rather than how loud it is. However, some local ordinances do have noise restrictions.

The key is using your horn responsibly. Don't blast it in residential areas at 2 AM or use it to harass other drivers. Use it as a safety device, which is what horns are designed for.

If you're concerned about your specific area, check your local vehicle code or give your DMV a call. In our experience, the vast majority of customers have zero issues with legality.

Your factory horn is an electric horn. It's a simple electromagnetic device that vibrates a diaphragm to create sound. Electric horns are compact and cheap, but they're not very loud and they don't have the deep, attention-grabbing tone that air horns produce.

An air horn uses compressed air pushed through a trumpet or diaphragm to create sound, similar to a train horn. This produces a much louder, deeper, and more commanding tone. The main components are:

• Air Compressor: Pressurizes air and stores it in the tank
• Air Tank: Holds compressed air ready for instant horn blasts
• Horn/Trumpet: Produces the actual sound when air is released
• Valve/Solenoid: Controls air flow from tank to horn

The trade-off is that air horns require more components and installation effort, but the sound difference is night and day. Once you hear a real air horn, you'll never want to go back to that factory honk.

Installing a 12V air horn system is straightforward if you're comfortable with basic automotive work. Here's the general process:

• Mount the Compressor and Tank: Choose your mounting location. Common spots include under the vehicle along the frame, underneath the cab or bed, in a toolbox or the bed, or in the engine bay. Secure the compressor and tank using the included brackets and hardware, making sure they're mounted firmly to handle vibration. Since the majority of our air compressors are weather resistant, they can be mounted anywhere on the vehicle. When mounting the air compressor outside, make sure to relocate the air filter to a dry location like inside the bed rails for example, using the included Air Filter Relocation Kit.
• Mount the Horns: Choose where you want to position your horn trumpets. Under the hood, behind the grille, or under the vehicle work well. Most truck owners mount them under the bed or behind the grille. Use the included mounting hardware to secure the horns. Our horns are so loud that regardless of what direction they're facing, they're going to be heard all around the vehicle for miles.
• Wire the System: Connect the compressor to your battery using the included wire and fuse (typically 30 to 40 amp). Run a wire from your horn button to the pressure switch, which activates the system. Most of our kits use a pressure switch with a built-in relay to simplify the wiring. For kits that require a separate relay, one is included. All necessary wire, electrical connectors, and fuses come with every kit, along with detailed wiring diagrams showing exactly where each connection goes.
• Connect the Air Lines: Run the included air line from the compressor outlet to the air tank inlet. Then connect another line from the tank outlet to the horns, running through the pressure switch or solenoid valve. Cut the air line to the appropriate lengths for your installation and secure all connections tightly using the included fittings to prevent air leaks. Make sure the lines are routed away from hot exhaust components and sharp edges.
• Test and Adjust: Once everything's connected, test the system and adjust horn positioning if needed for optimal sound direction.
