Two horns share the top spot at 149.4 dB: the Nathan AirChime K5, the authentic locomotive horn, and our King 5. Our Shocker XL comes in right behind them, and it's the horn inside our Conductor's Special kits. Everything needed from start to finish: the horn, an electric air valve, and a complete air system with an air tank, air compressor, pressure switch, and air gauge. A complete wiring kit ships in the box too, along with all necessary hardware and fittings. Nothing else is needed to get up and honking. The air side is a real onboard air system, so between honks it can air up tires. Kits differ mainly in horn and tank size, which set the sound and the honk time.

For most trucks, the Conductor's Special. Its four-bell Shocker XL mounts each bell individually, so you can spread the horns across the vehicle and fit them on practically anything. The Flatlaw and Mini Outlaw kits take the opposite approach, with the bells attached to a manifold as one complete horn, a simpler single-piece mount when you'd rather bolt up one unit than four. And if you want the real thing, our Nathan AirChime kits use authentic locomotive castings, the same horns working freight trains run, paired with the biggest air systems we sell.

Because a train horn needs 50 PSI or more to honk correctly, and no air compressor produces that on demand. Stored air is the only way to deliver it: the tank holds the pressure, the horn honks off the tank, and the compressor refills it afterward through the pressure switch. Volume is the other half, since most train horns get about 1 to 2 seconds of honk per gallon of air. For comparison, the direct drive compressor on an electric horn makes only around 15 PSI on demand, nowhere near enough to honk a train horn.

Yes. Most kits here are 12-volt, which covers pickups, cars, SUVs, RVs, and most boats. If your vehicle runs a 24-volt electrical system, common on commercial, military, and larger marine builds, this collection includes two kits built for it: the Conductor's Special 232 24-Volt and the Outlaw XL 232 24-Volt. And those two aren't the limit: we build custom 24-volt kits as well, so if neither one fits your setup, call us and we'll put together a 24-volt system around the horn you want.

The chord. A locomotive horn plays several tuned bells at once, so a true train horn needs at least three bells; one or two bells gives you an air horn's single note, not the train chord. Tone matters just as much as volume, because the low frequencies of a train horn carry farther than a high-pitched blast at the same decibel level. That's why our Shocker XL runs four bells tuned to match authentic locomotive horns, and why our authentic locomotive horns are the real castings themselves.

Owning a train horn is legal, and these kits go onto personal vehicles every day. What's regulated is use, and at the end of the day it comes down to how you honk. Use it as a safety measure to alert other drivers and you typically won't have any issues. Lean on it to startle people or cause trouble, and you're asking for a citation.
